The Loudness of Sam

written & illustrated by James Proimos (Harcourt Brace & Company)

From the time he was a baby, Sam cried loudly and he laughed loudly and no one ever shushed him. In fact, his parents loved every sound he made. Then his Aunt Tillie invites him to visit her in the big city. Brash cartoon-like illustrations carry this rambunctious story along swiftly as Sam discovers that no one in the big city laughs or cries and everybody shushes him. "Laughing is for monkeys," his aunt tells him. But before Sam's visit ends, Aunt Tillie changes. Readers 4-8 will find that Sam's loudness changes them as well. Good fun and wonderful pictures.
