Book Review (Schoolage)
It's hard to believe this is a first novel. It's that good, which is why it won the Ursula Nordstrom Fiction Contest for first time novelists.
This is the tale of two boys from the same Amazon tribe who embark on their "soche seche tente," a sixth sense test that boys from their tribe must pass on their thirteenth birthday.
One of the boys, Tirio, was cast out of his tribe because he had a disabled foot, but was adopted by an American woman. Yet, as his thirteenth birthday approaches, he feels a strong urge to return to the Amazon.
Luka, the other boy, has being preparing for his test all his life. The trials and tribulations these boys experience are fascinating (to adult readers as well), but speak well to the determination and spirit of everyone needing to reach a specific goal. BRINGING THE BOY HOME will be enjoyed by boys and girls who love adventure.
