KATIE CAUGHT A COLD

by Charlotte Cowan, M.D., illustrated by Katy Bratun. (Concord, MA: The Hippocratic Press) $17.95

Another in Dr. Cowan's books that tell simply what it's like to be sick...and to get better. Katie is ice skating with her friends, practicing for the Ice Show just five days away. Then she begins sneezing and starts feeling shivery. In the morning, Katie is all stuffed up. Her mom calls Dr. Hippo and describes what is wrong with her little cub. As Katie has no fever, the doctor does not prescribe an antibiotic. This is not only reassuring to mothers, but also teaches that antibiotics are only given for bacterial infections, not viral ones. As Katie feels better and goes to the Ice Show, her mother tells Daddy Bear, "I'm worried about Katie and her new cough...but Dr. Hippo told me not to worry unless it lastd longer than two weeks or had a fever with it." A clever story about having patience with the common cold and not over-using antibiotics.
