Book Review (Schoolage)
A beautifully illustrated book about the 44th President of the United States. From the very beginning, he was different from most of his friends. Barack was born in Hawaii to a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya. Although his father left when Barack was two years old, he always knew love from his mother and her parents who he called Gramps and Toot.
He lived with his mother for a few years in Indonesia, but he returned to his native Hawaii to his grandparent's home. His father returned to see him for a short time, but then was gone again.
Here is the story of a young bi-racial man who believed that the world could be a better place even as he struggled to find his place in that world. "Who am I?" he would ask, just as young people throughout the world ask. He found answers through education, through listening to others, and helping to make life better for everyone.
And now, this man with the strange name, becomes our 44th president. "Can we make this world a better place?" he asked and from everywhere voices echoed back, "Yes! We can!"
This is a beautifully written book for all children, offering hope despite how different they may feel.
