Doseage Chart: Benadryl

One of the most commonly used antihistamines in pediatrics in Benadryl. . Histamine is a very important mediator of allergy in children and is released into the blood during allergic reactions, respiratory allergy, and insect bites. As an antihistamine, Benadryl is effective in the temporary relief of symptoms from:

  • respiratory allergy (hayfever, etc.)
  • insect bites
  • allergic reactions to foods and medications.

With so many possible uses of this medication, it is difficult to separate out a side effect from the illness effect. However, drowsiness is generally regarded as the most common side effect.

Often stores will have their own brand, which may be less expensive. Parents can identify the medication by knowing the active ingredient of the medication, or the generic name. In the case of Benadryl, the generic name is diphenhydramine. When choosing a generic brand, be sure to read the major ingredients carefully. Some products will contain multiple active ingredients which could lead to overdosing, Consult the pharmacist if you are having difficulty selecting an over-the-counter medication for your child.
