Study Examines Tympanostomy Tubes


 
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics,  infants and toddlers who have persistent middle-ear fluid, and do not receive tympanostomy tubes (fluid drainage and ventilation tubes), appear to develop at the same rate as children who do receive them, according to the study "Otitis Media and Tympanostomy Tube Insertion During the First Three Years of Life."

Development refers to cognition, speech, language and psychosocial skills. Specialists often recommend the tubes for young children to avoid hearing defects that may affect the children's speech, language, or other aspects of development. But researchers found that in almost 400 otherwise healthy children younger than three with persistent middle-ear fluid, those who received tubes promptly had no better developmental outcomes at four years of age than those who waited a longer time for the fluid to clear on its own.
