At what age can a baby be put to sleep on their stomachs? |
|
| |
 |
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "We are unsure of the level of risk
associated with placing a baby on their stomach to during the first
year of life, although there are some data that suggest that the
greatest decrease in SIDS incidence in those countries that have
changed to mostly back sleeping position has been seen in the
younger aged infants (2 to 6 months). Therefore, the first 6
months, when babies are forming sleeping habits, are probably the
most important time to focus on. Nevertheless, until more data
suggest otherwise, it seems reasonable to continue to place
babies down for sleep on their backs throughout infancy."
The AAP says that sleep position preference is a learned behavior
among infants from birth to 4 to 6 months of age. However, many
infants over 6 months of age still haven't "learned" to like their stomachs,
position, so it is likely that they will continue turning over to a
position they prefer.
