Quick reference medical handouts used by Pediatric offices

My son is 12 months old. I stopped breast feeding at 16 weeks. He was drinking 24 ounces a day of Similac. He is now drinking whole milk. How many ounces of whole milk should he be drinking daily? I read that fat and iron is important to their diet at his age. I want to ensure I am giving him the required amount. What foods are good sources of iron? How much of those foods should he consume daily?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants remain on breast milk or formula until one year of age. The academy also advises whole milk, rather than low fat or fat free milk for children ages 1-2. Babies need extra fat for growth, neurological development and a healthy immune system. Each baby differs on the amount of milk they take in a 24 hour period. As long as your baby is thriving, then he is taking the right amount of milk for him!

The Recommended Dietary Allowances for iron, in milligrams (mg), are: infants 0 to 6 months, 6mg; infants 6 to 12 months, 10mg; children 1 to 10 years, 10mg. To read more on the foods that contain iron, click here
