Quick reference medical handouts used by Pediatric offices

My 9 month old son has a lump on the left side of his neck. It has been there for over a month and it is getting bigger. His doctor has been following up on it. He had some blood work done 2 weeks ago and his results came back normal. I brought him in today and she is sending me to get an ultrasound. Then to a specialist. I am very concerned. Could it be cancer? If it is a cyst how are they going to remove it? I can't bare the thought of my baby having to go through surgery! Please tell me there is an alternative.

There are many causes of neck lumps in children. Some may be quite normal and are due to swelling of lymph nodes or "glands" in response to an infection in the throat or sinuses. A swelling in the midline of the neck, especially above the voice box (Adam’s apple), can indicate the presence of a cyst which is a developmental abnormality .

Cancer is very rare in children but since it can occur, your doctor is doing the right thing by having it evaluated. The normal blood work should be reassuring since an abnormality of the blood would have been determined by the test. Most likely the lump will turn out to be either a lymph gland or a cyst, and "Mother Nature" tends to heal thesewith time. Please read the following articles from our site for more information:
