My ten year old son's penis seems to be very small in comparison to his younger brother's. The ten year olds is usually not even one inch long. He does appear to have an erection when he wakes up in the morning. Is there something to be concerned about, or is he just developing late?

We appreciate the question, especially since your son is probably wondering the same thing, whether or not he has expressed it to you.

The sequence of changes in puberty for boys is variable. It may start as early as 9-1/2 years of age, with an average of 12 years. It usually begins with the enlargement of the testes. Some boys may notice that the testicles have grown; others may not.

During puberty, the penis also begins to grow. This growth may start as early as 10 years of age or as late as age 14, but the average age that growth begins seems to be at about 12-1/4 years.

We would therefore twll you not to worry, and to mention to your son that everyone develops at their own rate, some earlier than others, but by the time adolescence is over, everyone develops the same.

If you son is overweight, it might make his penis seem smaller than it actually is.
