Quick reference medical handouts used by Pediatric offices

I have a friend who has a concern about her son. he seems to have a problem with shaking his hands alot. he just does it out of the blue and she thinks he don't even realize he is doing it. if you have any information it would be greatly accepted thank you

There is some additional information which would be helpful to answer your question regarding a boy with shaking of his hands, including his age, history of anyone else in the family with similar symptoms and any medications he may be taking.

The most likely diagnosis is that this boy has what is called a tremor. This is a condition involving involuntary, rhythmic movements which may be present at rest or with movement. Often, but not always, this may be hereditary.

Certain medications may result in tremors, as can occassionally caffeine. It less often can be the result of a medical condition such as hyperthyroidism, hypoglycemia, or certain tumors which secrete adrenalin. Also, although not common, a tremor may be a sign of an anxiety problem.

Most tremors are mild and do not bother the child, but sometimes they can cause some difficulty. There are some medications that can help if they become problamatic. Because of the several different possible causes of a tremor, including some associated with significant medical conditions, we urge your friend to arrange an appointment for her son with a pediatrician for this problem.
